Do Kenya safari guides speak Polish?
No. Your guide will speak English. This is the norm across all serious safari camps.
Do not worry, you do not need perfect English. Guides use simple words, point a lot, and know how to read a group and slow down for you.
Most camps also have English-speaking staff at reception and in the dining room, and menus and signs are in English.
If your English is weak, or you just want more comfort, book a private vehicle with a guide experienced with non-native speakers. This is standard at most camps.
We always recommend a private vehicle for honeymoon couples. You get a dedicated guide, an open jeep, and total control over your day, plus a quieter experience, which matters when you are watching a lioness with cubs at 6 a.m.
Visa and eTA requirements for Polish passport holders
Good news. Polish citizens do not need a traditional visa sticker. Kenya uses an electronic travel authorization, called eTA, and you apply online rather than visiting an embassy.
The eTA costs about USD 30 per person. Paying by card can push the total closer to USD 39, because of a card-processing surcharge. There is no separate transit fee if Kenya is your final destination.
You need to apply at least 3 days before your flight, but we suggest 2 weeks before to give yourself a buffer, since processing time can vary.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date and have two blank pages. Check this now, not the week before you fly.
Apply only on the official Kenyan eTA website, which ends with .go.ke or .etakenya.go.ke. Look-alike sites charge extra.
Yellow fever certificate and vaccination requirements
Here is the part that confuses most Polish travelers. Poland is not a yellow fever risk country, so a direct flight from Warsaw to Nairobi does not require a yellow fever certificate.
The rule kicks in based on where you have been, not where your passport is from. Kenya requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for travelers arriving from, or transiting through, a country with yellow fever risk. A long layover, generally 12 hours or more, in a risk country such as Ethiopia can trigger this requirement, even if you are only changing planes.
Dubai, Doha, and Istanbul are not yellow fever risk countries, so a layover there does not require the certificate. If your routing includes a long stopover in Addis Ababa or another endemic country, check the current requirement before you fly, since airline and border staff will ask to see the physical certificate.
If you do need the vaccine, get it at least 10 days before departure. It lasts for life, and many clinics in Warsaw and Krakow offer it.
Other recommended vaccines include hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and typhoid. Malaria tablets are essential, so ask your doctor about Doxycycline or Malarone, both prescription only.
Best time of year to visit Kenya from Poland
Kenya has two dry seasons, also called the “high seasons,” when wildlife viewing is best.
The first runs from January to March. The Great Migration is in the southern Serengeti then, so the Mara is quieter. Weather is hot and dry.
The second runs from July to October. This is migration season in the Masai Mara, with river crossings, dense wildlife, and higher prices.
June and November are “green seasons.” There is rain, but the landscape looks stunning and lodge rates drop. Many honeymoon couples choose this time to balance cost and beauty.
For Polish travelers, school holidays matter. Consider May and September, when weather is still good but crowds are smaller.
Here is a simple rule. For the classic Mara crossing, go July through September. For a quieter, more romantic trip, go February or March.
Flights from Warsaw to Nairobi
There is no direct flight from Warsaw to Nairobi. Plan for one layover. Common options include:
- LOT Polish Airlines plus a partner to Nairobi. You will connect in Doha, Dubai, or Istanbul.
- Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, then onward to Nairobi.
- Qatar Airways via Doha.
- Emirates via Dubai.
Total flight time is usually 11 to 14 hours, including the layover. The actual air time from Warsaw to Nairobi is about 8.5 hours.
Book early. Flights from Poland to Kenya in July and August can be double the price of February.
When you land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), expect immigration to take 30 to 60 minutes. Have your eTA confirmation and passport ready, and your yellow fever certificate too if your routing required one.
What a Kenya safari costs and how Polish travelers can pay
You have two ways to pay: in US dollars or with a credit card. Polish złoty (PLN) is rarely accepted in Kenya, so do not rely on it.
Carry a mix of USD cash for tips and small purchases, and use a credit card for lodge bills and park fees. Visa and Mastercard work widely. Amex is less accepted.

Time difference between Poland and Kenya
Kenya is UTC+3 all year. Poland is UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer, so Kenya is 2 hours ahead in winter and 1 hour ahead in summer.
When it is 12:00 in Warsaw in July, it is 13:00 in Nairobi. This is a small change, and jet lag is rarely an issue.
Combining Kenya with Zanzibar or Tanzania
Yes, you can combine them. It is common and easy. You can fly from Nairobi to Zanzibar in about 1.5 hours, on airlines like Kenya Airways or Precision Air.
Tanzania requires a separate visa for Zanzibar. Polish citizens can skip it only if they stay inside the airport transit area and never clear passport control. Since you will leave the terminal to enjoy the beach, you need the visa no matter how many days you stay.
We recommend 3 or 4 days in Zanzibar after your safari, for a relaxing contrast of white sand beaches, spice tours, and old Stone Town.
Most travelers do this: 6 days safari, then 3 days beach, for a total trip of 10 to 12 days.
How many days do you need for a safari?
5 to 7 days in the safari areas is ideal. For a first visit, choose 2 parks, such as the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru.
Here is a sample itinerary for a honeymoon:
- Day 1: Arrive Nairobi, overnight at a city hotel
- Day 2: Fly to the Masai Mara, afternoon game drive
- Day 3: Full day in the Mara, optional bush breakfast
- Day 4: Early morning drive, then transfer to Lake Nakuru, roughly 235 km and 4 to 6 hours depending on road conditions
- Day 5: Game drive in Lake Nakuru, then drive to Nairobi
