Charging electronics at safari camps in Kenya comes up on almost every pre-trip call. “Will I be able to charge my camera every night?” It is a fair worry. Most first-time travelers picture a safari camp as either fully wired like a hotel or completely off the grid. The truth sits in between, and it depends a lot on which camp you are in and what time of day you ask.

I have charged phones off a Land Cruiser’s cigarette lighter on the way to Amboseli and plugged a laptop into a solar inverter at a tented camp in the Mara at 7 p.m., right after the generator kicked on. Both are normal. Neither means you are roughing it.

Kenya uses the Type G plug, the same three-pin square design as the UK. If you are flying in from the US, Europe, or most of Asia, you need an adapter, not a converter. Pack at least one, ideally two, since camps rarely stock spares and you do not want to be sharing one outlet between two people’s gear every evening.

A single universal travel adapter with a UK/Type G output covers phones, cameras, and battery chargers. If you are traveling with a partner or as a family, a second adapter or a small multi-port power strip saves a lot of evening queueing at the one outlet in your tent.

Voltage and Frequency: Do You Need a Converter?

Kenya runs on 240V at 50Hz. Almost every phone charger, camera battery charger, and laptop power brick sold in the last ten years is dual voltage, meaning it accepts anywhere from 100V to 240V automatically. Check the fine print on the brick itself. If it says “INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz,” you only need a plug adapter.

The devices that do need a real voltage converter are older hairdryers, straighteners, and some CPAP machines without dual-voltage input. If you are unsure about a specific medical device, check with the manufacturer before you fly, not at the camp.

Solar and Generator Schedules: The Part Nobody Tells You

This is where camps genuinely differ, and it is worth understanding before you pack.

Mobile tented camps, the kind you find in conservancies like Naboisho and Mara North in the Maasai Mara, usually run on a mix of solar battery banks and a generator that comes on for a couple of hours in the morning and again after dinner. Outside those windows, your tent might have a small solar-charged light but no active outlet. Staff will often collect devices at a central charging point and return them charged, which is standard practice and worth asking about at check-in.

Permanent lodges, common around Amboseli and parts of Laikipia, tend to have more consistent power, sometimes 24 hours from a larger solar array backed by generator or grid connection. Rooms usually have their own outlets that stay live all day.

Semi-permanent camps in places like Samburu or the Mara Triangle often sit between the two, with solar power during the day and generator support in the evening for a few hours.

None of this is a shortcoming. Limited evening power is often a deliberate choice. Generators running all night would ruin the quiet that makes a camp in the bush worth visiting in the first place. If you want to hear hyenas at 2 a.m. instead of a diesel engine, this is the trade-off.

Charging in the Safari Vehicle

Most safari vehicles, whether a closed-roof Land Cruiser or a customized open-sided game drive vehicle, have a 12V port similar to a car’s cigarette lighter, sometimes paired with a USB port. It works only while the engine is running, so on long transfer days, like the roughly 5 to 6 hour drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara via Narok, you can top up a phone or camera battery along the way. During actual game drives, engines often idle or shut off entirely for quiet wildlife viewing, so do not count on vehicle charging during those hours.

A car-charging USB hub with two or three ports is worth packing if you are sharing a vehicle with family or friends. It turns one 12V socket into enough capacity for everyone’s phone.

Wi-Fi and Phone Signal in the Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu

Phone signal is better than most first-timers expect. Safaricom and Airtel cover the main roads and towns around all three regions reasonably well, and many camps sit close enough to a tower for at least a weak signal near the main lounge. Deep inside conservancies like Mara North or Naboisho, signal drops out completely, which many guests find is part of the appeal.

Wi-Fi, where it exists, usually comes from a satellite connection and is limited to the main dining or lounge area, not individual tents. Speeds are fine for messaging and email, less reliable for video calls or uploading large photo files. Power Banks and Multi-USB Hubs: What to Actually Pack

A 20,000mAh power bank is the sweet spot for most travelers. It is large enough to fully charge a phone three to four times or a mirrorless camera battery six to eight times, and small enough to clear airline carry-on rules, which generally cap lithium batteries around 100Wh (roughly 27,000mAh at 3.7V).

Pack:

  • One power bank per person, 20,000mAh, charged before you leave Nairobi
  • A multi-port USB wall adapter so you are not fighting over the one outlet
  • Spare camera batteries if you shoot mirrorless, since these drain faster than DSLR batteries
  • A short car charging cable for the vehicle’s 12V port

What You Can and Cannot Reliably Charge

Phones, camera batteries, and small power banks charge without issue at nearly every camp, mobile or permanent. Laptops draw more power and charge more slowly, especially where camps ration generator hours, so plan to charge overnight rather than expecting a quick top-up before dinner. Drone batteries are the trickiest. They draw high current and often need their manufacturer’s specific charger, which some camps’ inverters cannot handle well. If a drone is part of your trip, check with your camp in advance and consider a dedicated drone power bank.
