Tsavo East and West together form one of the largest protected areas in the world. Tsavo East is flat, open, and famous for red elephants dusted in ochre soil. Tsavo West is hillier and greener, with springs that attract wildlife. The distance between the two parks is about 60 km via the Voi gate.

As of 2026, Kenya no longer issues a traditional visa sticker. You must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online before you fly.
The eTA costs USD 34 for the standard processing. Apply at least 2 weeks before departure. Approval takes 3 to 7 days on average.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. You also need proof of a return ticket and a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from a risk country.

For Italian travelers, the yellow fever certificate is not required to enter Kenya if you arrive directly from Italy. But if you are coming from a country with yellow fever risk, you need the certificate.
We recommend getting the yellow fever vaccine anyway. It is safe, lasts a lifetime, and gives you peace of mind if you take a side trip to Uganda or Tanzania.
Malaria is a real risk in most safari areas. Take antimalarial medication. Start it before your trip, continue while you travel, and finish it after you return. Your doctor in Italy can prescribe the right one.
Drink bottled or filtered water only. Do not drink tap water. Most lodges provide safe drinking water in your room, so bring a refillable bottle to reduce plastic waste.

Fluent Italian speaking guides exist, but they are rare. Most professional guides speak excellent English. Many speak French or German. Outside a handful of high-end camps, Italian is not the default.

For a couple who speaks basic English, a local English speaking guide is the realistic default. The animals do not care what language you speak. But the guide’s commentary on behavior and ecology is richer in his native language.

Pack neutral colors. Khaki, olive, beige. Avoid bright colors like red or yellow.
Daytime temperatures in the Mara range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Mornings and nights are cool, especially in July and August. Bring layers.

From Nairobi, you fly by small charter plane to the Mara airstrips. The flight takes 45 minutes. This is the easiest way to reach the parks. Scheduled flights cost around USD 180 one way.
You can also drive from Nairobi to the Mara. The distance is about 260 km and takes 5 to 6 hours. The roads are improving, but a rough section after Narok town slows you down.

Yes, you can combine safari with the coast. This is our most popular honeymoon itinerary.
Diani Beach is 30 km south of Mombasa. The white sand and warm Indian Ocean are perfect after a week in the bush. Fly from the Mara to Diani via Nairobi or direct seasonal flights.
Watamu and Malindi are north of Mombasa. Watamu has a marine park with excellent snorkeling. Malindi is more built up and historic.
Lamu Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site. No cars, narrow streets, and a Swahili culture that feels a world away from the savannah. Reaching Lamu requires an extra flight and a short boat ride, but it is worth it.
Budget at least 3 nights on the coast to unwind properly.

Safari logistics are complex. Park fees, conservancy permits, internal flights, and camp availability all need coordination. Planning from home means you lock in the best camps before they fill up.
Booking on arrival in Nairobi is risky. You might find a last minute deal, but you might also find no availability at all during peak season. You also lose the chance to prepare with an Italian speaking agent.
We recommend booking the entire trip, including internal flights and camp nights, at least 4 to 6 months ahead.
Jeep Privata o Safari di Gruppo Condiviso?
A private jeep costs more. You get flexibility on departure times, vehicle windows, and photo stops. You set the pace.
A shared vehicle costs less. You share the cost per seat. The jeep has 6 passengers, so you pay roughly one third the private rate. But you compromise on photo angles, bathroom breaks, and game drive duration.
For a honeymoon couple on a defined budget, we recommend a private jeep for at least the Mara portion. For Amboseli or Tsavo, a shared vehicle is a reasonable saving.
