How Far Is Tsavo From Nairobi
Tsavo is Kenya’s largest protected area. It’s split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West by the A109 Mombasa Highway and the SGR railway line. Both halves start roughly 230 km from Nairobi at the town of Mtito Andei. But your lodge determines your real transfer time.
Tsavo West lodges like Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge sit about 295 km from Nairobi. Tsavo East lodges near Voi, like Voi Safari Lodge, sit about 330 to 350 km out. You continue past Mtito Andei toward Voi town before turning into the park.
That 50 to 100 km gap is why one traveler’s “5 hour drive” and another’s “6.5 hour drive” are both correct. They just booked different parks.
Driving From Nairobi to Tsavo: What the Road Is Actually Like
The A109 Mombasa Highway is tarmac the whole way. It’s the main freight corridor between Nairobi and the port of Mombasa. That means it’s paved and safe to drive. It’s also busy with trucks, especially through Athi River, Kibwezi, and the long straight stretch past Mtito Andei.
Getting out of Nairobi itself can eat 45 minutes to over an hour if you leave during rush hour, roughly 7:00 to 9:00 am or after 5:00 pm. Once you clear the Athi River tollgate area, the highway opens up. The drive becomes flat, straight, and honestly a bit monotonous. There isn’t much scenery until you’re close to the park boundary.
Budget these times from central Nairobi or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA):
- Kilaguni Serena (Tsavo West): 4.5 to 5 hours
- Ngulia Safari Lodge (Tsavo West): about 5 hours

Add 30 to 45 minutes if you’re picking up from JKIA rather than a Nairobi hotel. The airport sits south of the city center, closer to the highway.
Flying From Nairobi to Tsavo: Airstrips and Charter Costs
Scheduled and charter flights leave from Wilson Airport, not JKIA. This catches first-time travelers off guard. Wilson is a separate, smaller airport about 20 minutes from central Nairobi.
Safarilink and AirKenya both run scheduled flights that touch down at Kilaguni Airstrip for Tsavo West lodges, and Voi Airstrip for Tsavo East lodges. Some camps, including Finch Hattons Luxury Camp, use their own private airstrip with a short road transfer built into the package.
Flight time itself is short, typically 45 to 55 minutes from Wilson. But scheduled flights often route through other stops. Amboseli is a common one. Your actual air time can run closer to 60 to 75 minutes including a touchdown elsewhere.
On cost, expect these indicative ranges:

- Private charter (4 to 5 seat Cessna), one way: roughly USD 900 to 1,400 total, split between passengers
That charter price looks steep next to a USD 30 tank of fuel for the drive. But once you count a driver-guide’s day rate, park entry timing, and a full day otherwise spent in the vehicle, flying starts to make sense for shorter trips.

The Train Option: Madaraka Express to Voi
The Madaraka Express SGR line runs from Nairobi to Mombasa. It stops at Voi Station, about 3 to 3.5 hours after departure. It’s a genuinely comfortable ride, air-conditioned, with assigned seating.
The catch is that Voi Station sits in town, not at a lodge gate. You still need a road transfer of 30 to 45 minutes from the station to most Tsavo East properties. It’s longer if you’re headed into Tsavo West. Trains also run on a fixed daily schedule, so it only works if departure and arrival times line up with your itinerary. Most tour operators, us included, treat the train as a nice-to-have rather than a primary transfer. A private vehicle waiting at Voi Station adds coordination without saving much real time over driving straight through.
Bus and Matatu: The Budget Route
Long-distance buses and shared matatus run from Nairobi’s Mombasa-route terminals to Voi town. The trip takes 5 to 6 hours depending on stops and traffic. Fares run roughly KES 800 to 1,500. This works for budget backpackers heading to Voi town itself. It’s not a practical option for reaching a lodge inside the park, since you’d still need a separate vehicle and a valid park entry arrangement from Voi.
Best Time to Visit and How Season Affects Drive Time
The Mombasa Highway is tarmac and holds up well year round. The driving time itself doesn’t swing much with season. What changes is traffic and visibility. During the long rains, roughly April and May, and again in November, sudden downpours can slow the final stretch into the park. Some lodge access roads turn to reddish murram mud. Add 30 to 45 minutes to your park-gate-to-lodge leg in wet months.
Dry season runs from June to October and again January to March. It gives the most predictable transfer times and the best wildlife viewing around waterholes. That’s when most first-time travelers should plan around anyway.
Which Gate You’ll Use
Tsavo East is entered mainly through Voi Gate near Voi town, Manyani Gate further north, or Buchuma Gate from the Mombasa side. Tsavo West uses Mtito Andei Gate as the main entry off the highway, plus Chyulu Gate for lodges on the park’s northern edge near the Chyulu Hills. Your driver-guide picks the gate based on your lodge. It’s worth confirming which one before you leave Nairobi, since it affects your final drive time by 20 to 40 minutes either way.
