I have parked at the Soysambu gate before sunrise more times than I can count, waiting for the light to come up over the lake before the wind picks up and the flamingos lift off. Lake Elementaita is small compared to Nakuru, only about 18 square kilometers of open water, but it packs in over 450 recorded bird species. The trick is knowing which corner to work at which hour. Here are the seven lake elementaita birding hotspots I actually route my Plain Safaris groups through, and why each one earns its place.
The 7 Lake Elementaita Birding Hotspots
1. Serena Elementaita shoreline. This stretch, right in front of what used to be Delamere Camp, gives the widest open view of the lake. It is the best single spot for Lesser and Greater Flamingo counts and the reliable place to find Great White Pelican working the shallows. Arrive within an hour of sunrise for the best light and the calmest water.
2. Kikopey Hot Springs. At the lake’s southern end, warm mineral water flows into the lake and draws pelicans and cormorants year-round. It sits just off the main road near Kikopey trading center, so it is often the first stop for anyone driving in from Nairobi. Ten minutes here can turn up more cormorant activity than a full circuit elsewhere on the lake.
3. Soysambu Conservancy cliffs. Above the western shore, a low escarpment gives raptors a lift on the morning thermals. This is where I have had my best Rüppell’s Vulture and Pallid Harrier sightings, both scarce enough elsewhere in the Rift Valley to make the detour worthwhile.
4. Sleeping Warrior hill slopes. This ridge inside Soysambu Conservancy is one of the few places on the lake where walking is actually permitted with a conservancy guide. Schalow’s Wheatear and other scrub species favor the rocky lower slopes, and the walk itself is a rare chance to bird on foot rather than from a vehicle.
5. Mereroni River mouth. Where the Mereroni feeds into the lake, reed beds and shallow mud attract the birds most specific to Elementaita. This lake holds one of Kenya’s most important populations of Black-necked Grebe and Cape Teal, and the river mouth is where I find both most reliably, alongside the localized Maccoa Duck.
6. Acacia woodland near the airstrip. Away from the water, the dry acacia scrub around Soysambu’s airstrip is good for bee-eaters, weavers, and other dry-country species that never show up on a pure waterbird list. It is an easy add-on if you have twenty minutes before or after a lakeside session.
7. Eastern shoreline picnic site. On the lake’s quieter eastern edge, shallow water and exposed mud draw waders in numbers. Pied Avocet and African Spoonbill both feed here, and because fewer vehicles pass this side, it is one of the calmest spots on the whole lake.

Best Time of Year to Visit
Lake elementaita flamingos are present year-round, but the biggest flocks gather from November to February, with counts sometimes passing 200,000 birds. July to October is the second-best window, with drier roads, cooler mornings, and a good pull of raptors and migrants moving through the Rift Valley flyway. I try to avoid the long rains in April and May, when the tracks around Sleeping Warrior turn to soup.
Entry Fees and Getting There
Lake Elementaita sits inside the privately run Soysambu Conservancy, not a KWS park, so the fee structure is different. Expect roughly USD 25 per adult in high season (July to September and December to February) and about USD 20 in low season, with lower rates for children. By road, Elementaita is about 120 km from Nairobi, a two to two and a half hour drive on the A104 Nairobi-Nakuru highway, roughly midway between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. Turn off near Kikopey trading center for the hot springs entrance, or continue a little further for the Soysambu main gate and the Serena shoreline.
Elementaita or Nakuru for Birding
Lake Nakuru has more infrastructure and a near guarantee of rhino alongside the birds. Lake Elementaita answers with fewer vehicles, a lower entry fee, and walking access on Sleeping Warrior that Nakuru simply does not allow. For soysambu conservancy birding focused purely on species and quiet mornings, Elementaita usually wins. If you want rhino and leopard in the same outing, Nakuru still has the edge. Where to Stay Near the Hotspots
Serena Elementaita sits directly on the shoreline hotspot, so a pre-breakfast walk along the water is possible without any driving. Budget travelers do well at Sirville Lodge or Cactus Eco Camp, both under 15 km from the lake. Basing overnight here beats a rushed day trip from Naivasha or Nakuru, since it adds a dawn session right when bird activity peaks.
