Map of Kenya’s Rift Valley Lakes
Four parks and reserves in a tight loop north of Nairobi. Hippos surface at dusk, rhinos live behind fences, geysers plume, and flamingos raft across shallow water. Two to three days, all by road, no flights needed.
The Four Lakes Circuit
A clockwise loop from Nairobi takes you through four distinct ecosystems. Naivasha and Hell’s Gate pair easily into one day trip; Nakuru and Bogoria form the northern loop. Water levels and rainfall drive what you’ll see, especially for flamingos, which concentrate differently year to year depending on how much fresh water flows in.

The Four Parks & Reserves
Lake Naivasha sits 90 km north of Nairobi (1.5 to 2 hours by road). The lake attracts hippos that surface at dusk and dawn. Crescent Island, a private sanctuary on the lake, lets you walk among giraffes and zebras without a vehicle. Boat rides show birdlife and the far shoreline. The town of Naivasha has fuel, supplies, and casual lodges.
Hell’s Gate National Park lies just 10 km past Naivasha (100 km from Nairobi, 2 hours total). At 68 square kilometers, it’s Kenya’s only park where you can walk or cycle. No lions or leopards live here, the geothermal activity and escarpment cliffs are what make it unique. Rent bicycles at Elsa Gate and ride the gorge floor, or hike to the geothermal springs and steam vents. Not a game reserve in the traditional sense, but rewarding for a full day.
Lake Nakuru National Park sits 163 km from Nairobi (2.5 hours). The 188 square-kilometer fenced reserve protects black and white rhinos. Tree-climbing lions sometimes rest in acacia branches here. Baboon Cliff offers a sweeping view of the lake and surrounding woodland. Flamingos that once blanketed the lake have largely moved to Bogoria after water levels rose in the 2010s.
Lake Bogoria National Reserve lies another 87 km north (total 250 km from Nairobi, 5 hours). Hot springs dot the lakeside, and geysers erupt without warning. Bogoria now holds Kenya’s largest flamingo concentration in most years. A living, pink shoreline shifts with water levels and algae growth. The road is rougher than Hell’s Gate, and fewer tourists make it out here.
Distances & Driving Times
| Route Segment | Distance | Driving Time |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi to Lake Naivasha | 90 km | 1.5-2 hours |
| Naivasha to Hell’s Gate | 10 km | 20 minutes |
| Hell’s Gate to Lake Nakuru | 63 km | 1-1.5 hours |
| Nakuru to Lake Bogoria | 87 km | 1.5-2 hours |
| Bogoria back to Nairobi (direct) | 220 km | 3-4 hours |
Wildlife & What to See
Permanent residents include hippos, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and multiple antelope species across all four sites. Rhinos are fenced into Nakuru. Birdlife is exceptional year-round, over 400 species in the lakes region, from fish eagles to sun grebes and secretary birds.
Seasonal abundance: Flamingos concentrate on Bogoria during dry months and January-February. Tree-climbing lions are seen more regularly in Nakuru during June to October. Newborn animals arrive in November and December after the short rains.
Lodging & Practicalities
Naivasha town has budget and mid-range options within walking distance of the main street. Several eco-lodges sit lakeside, offering boat rides and walking safaris on Crescent Island. Hell’s Gate has one basic lodge at park headquarters. Nakuru town offers lodge choices just outside the park gate. Bogoria has minimal infrastructure, book accommodation in advance if you plan to stay overnight, or visit as a day trip from Nakuru.
Roads are generally good tar from Nairobi through Nakuru. The stretch to Bogoria transitions to graded murram (rough gravel), passable year-round but slow after heavy rain. Fill fuel tanks in Naivasha or Nakuru; Bogoria has no fuel station.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days does the four-lakes circuit take?
Two full days is tight but doable if you start early and skip details. Three days is better, one day for Naivasha and Hell’s Gate, one for Nakuru, one for Bogoria. Many visitors split it across weekends using Nairobi as a base for day trips.
When should I visit for flamingos?
Flamingos respond to water levels, not a fixed calendar. Bogoria reliably holds dense flocks June through October and again in January-February. April through May bring rain, which raises water levels and sometimes disperses flamingos. Visit Bogoria if flamingos are your priority; don’t assume they’ll be there.
Do I need a 4×4 vehicle?
A regular car works on the tar roads to Nakuru. The murram road to Bogoria can get rough after rain, but a 2WD sedan manages it in dry conditions. Hire a driver-guide familiar with the route, they know which roads are passable after weather. High-clearance is not required.
Can I walk or cycle in Hell’s Gate?
Yes, that’s what makes it unique. You can hike the gorge, cycle the floor, and walk to geothermal springs, all without a vehicle. Hire a ranger at Elsa Gate if you’re unfamiliar with the routes. It’s not dangerous, but the sun is intense; carry water and start early.
